About Boise

#SEJ2023 in Boise Is a Wrap!

#SEJ2023 in Boise, Idaho, postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic, took place April 19-23, 2023, hosted by Boise State University.

Thank you to our amazing volunteer moderators, tour leaders, and speakers for their hard work in making this a conference organized by journalists, for journalists.

And huge thanks to our host, Boise State University, and our main conference sponsors, Hewlett Foundation and Walton Family Foundation, and other generous sponsors, without whom #SEJ2023 would not be possible. Thank you for helping us tell the world’s most important stories!

Checkout multimedia coverage. Note: Audio recordings of most sessions will be posted a week or so after the conference.

Couldn’t attend Boise in person? Watch the recordings!

It’s critically important to SEJ to gather evidence on the impact of our work. So we’re tracking stories inspired by or informed by our conference in Boise. The stories don’t have to be about Boise or Idaho; they can be based on sources or ideas you got from being at the conference. Please help us to keep SEJ strong and share links, photos, copies of reporting generated or informed by this conference. Send your story links to Cindy MacDonald, SEJ’s Web content manager. It’s never too late. Please send yours! Moderators, speakers, tour leaders: We also welcome resources, tipsheets, etc., from sessions or tours that you wish to share.

March 31, 2023 — The Society of Environmental Journalists is holding its annual conference in Boise, Idaho this April. In light of concerns raised by members, the SEJ Board of Directors issued a statement in recognition of how participants may be affected by recent Idaho state legislation seeking to restrict reproductive health care and LGBTQ+ rights.

The Society of Environmental Journalists and The Uproot Project partnered to offer diversity fellowships (worth up to $2500) to support journalists’ attendance at #SEJ2023 in Boise. See the selected fellows here!

Keep up to date by subscribing to our Annual Conference email list.

About the Conference

Idaho bridges more than the continental divide: A red state with a streak of bright purple, Idaho banks on tech, recreation and agriculture. Its history of logging, ranching and mining has left a complicated legacy on its awe-inspiring landscape. In Boise, America’s fastest growing city, you can ski and golf on the same winter day. But the challenges and opportunities facing state and tribal governments are familiar: urban sprawl, limited resources, energy sources and conserving the wild for future generations.
